WeGetIt.org Wednesday Bulletin
Weekly news, Biblical analysis, and practical advice on
caring for the environment and the poor, Biblically
Dear Friend,
Thank you for adding your name to the thousands of pastors, Christians, and evangelical leaders from across the country who have signed the WeGetIt.org declaration! If a million Christians sign this statement, we can send an important message to our leaders that Biblical principles and factual evidence, not media hype about things like global warming, should guide our care of the environment and the poor.
Every week, the WeGetIt.org Wednesday Bulletin provides updates on the stewardship-related news of our day, and offers some practical ways to think Biblically about these issues. As you read, please be thinking of the people you know who would benefit from this information. Then, forward this message to your friends and encourage them to sign the declaration.
Cartoon character tells children when to die
In a BreakPoint article, Chuck Colson notes that global warming alarmism and population control go hand-in-hand.
Children learn many useful things from television shows and cartoon characters.... Now, a cartoon character is telling them when they should die....
It is the logical, if unsettling, consequence of the misanthropic worldview of much of the environmental movement. A few months ago, another group...proposed a "carbon tax" for every child beyond two a family had. In both cases, the assumption is that there is nothing wrong with the environment that just fewer people living more wretched lives cannot solve.
In the biblical view, man, made in the image of God, is the glory of creation. He is also the steward of creation. The fact that man has not often lived up to his responsibilities does not negate the truth of the biblical worldview.
We are grateful for leaders like Mr. Colson who are willing to stand for Biblical truth, and we're pleased that he recently added his name to the thousands who have already signed the WeGetIt.org declaration.
Developing nations tell the G8, "Don't hold your breath!"
The Group of Eight (G8) last week committed to "the goal of achieving at least 50% reduction of global [greenhouse gas] emissions by 2050." The G8 may huff and puff all it wants, but it won't badger the world's largest emerging economies, the G5, to open the door to draconian cuts in energy use.
Their reasoning is simple. First, they believe it is "the responsibility of rich nations to cut CO2 emissions," commented Benny Peiser, and "poor and developing nations had no option but to reject any proposal that would inevitably undermine the economic growth that is necessary to pull hundreds of millions of people out of poverty."
Second, they aren't buying the hype that human carbon dioxide emissions are the main cause of global warming. G5 member India, whose population is 25% more than that of all G8 nations combined, released a plan, the first two key points of which were (1) "No firm link between the documented changes and warming due to anthropogenic climate change has yet been established," and (2) "Need for energy to meet the developmental aspirations of the people."
Polls: "Greening" of evangelicals is greatly exaggerated
Despite vigorous advocacy by a few people, a press eager to tell the story, and millions of dollars spent on public relations, the fact remains that evangelicals simply aren't splintering on issues like global warming. This year's National Survey on Religion and Public Life (by Calvin College) found that despite the efforts of some leaders to encourage evangelicals to support stricter government control over the environment, "evangelicals as a whole are actually less supportive of environmental regulation in 2008 than they were in 2004." As one expert observes, "Global warming may have peaked as a major political issue."
A January Barna study found that only 33% of evangelicals consider global warming to be a major challenge. Evangelicals are the most skeptical segment of the American population, and they differ most from the general public on this issue among the ten included in the poll.
Our society is increasingly deceived (and even clinically depressed) by global warming hysteria. The WeGetIt.org campaign is a great way for Christians, churches, and evangelical leaders to speak the truth, promote sensible environmental stewardship, and protect the poor.
You may be interested to know that the WeGetIt.org campaign was recently featured in WORLD Magazine. The article (subscription required) calls the campaign "an earnest challenge for evangelicals to obey the biblical mandate for stewardship without adopting emotion-driven global warming hysteria."
Thanks for reading! Word of mouth is the most effective way to get the truth out. Help us reach one million signers by forwarding this email to your friends, and encouraging them to sign the WeGetIt.org declaration. Together, we can take a stand for truth and for the poor.
Gratefully,
-- The WeGetIt.org campaign team
